What happened
On 9 August 2022, at approximately 16:02 local time, a mid-air collision occurred northeast of Staré Sedlo village in the Tachov district of the Czech Republic. The incident involved two gliders, HB-3025 (a Rolladen-Schneider LS 4-a) and G-XWON (a Rolladen-Schneider LS-8), both operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR). At the time of the accident, both aircraft were participating in a competition flight for the Junior World Gliding Championships 2022. Both aircraft had departed from and were intended to return to Tábor (LKTA).
The investigation
The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (STSB) was notified of the accident involving the Swiss-registered aircraft. Following the notification, an investigation was opened by the Czech Republic's Air Accident Investigation Institute (AAII). The investigation focused on the circumstances surrounding the collision between the two aircraft during the competition flight.
