What happened
On March 8, 2014, a private Blackshape Aircraft CF300, registration I-X010, was returning from a flight over the Swiss Plateau when the pilot identified a malfunction regarding the right main landing gear. While passing over Bex, the aircraft flew at a low altitude, allowing ground observers to visually confirm that the right landing gear had failed to extend.
Following radio communications with the Bex aerodrome manager, the pilot decided to divert to Sion Airport (LSGS), which could provide necessary emergency services. The pilot notified Sion tower of the mechanical issue and requested an approach to the grass runway. During the landing sequence, the aircraft touched down on its belly with the engine shut down. Emergency responders were on standby and present during the event.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the mechanical failure of the landing gear and the subsequent landing procedure. The inquiry established that the aircraft's right main gear remained retracted during the approach and touchdown. The landing was performed on a grass strip to mitigate risks, and the engine was stopped prior to the impact.
Findings
- The primary cause of the incident was a defective right main landing gear.
- The aircraft sustained damage to the landing gear, propeller, and fuselage.
- The passenger on board remained uninjured during the incident.
