What happened
On 21 September 2010, a Team Minimax 91A, registration G-BXSU, was conducting a local flight near Long Lane Farm, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. During the final stages of the approach, the pilot reduced engine power for landing. As the aircraft entered the flare, the airspeed dropped below the required normal approach speed. This reduction in speed, combined with a loss of elevator authority due to reduced power, prevented the pilot from controlling the aircraft's descent rate effectively.
The aircraft subsequently made a heavy landing, which caused the landing gear to collapse. During the sequence, the propeller struck the ground before the aircraft came to a complete stop. The impact also resulted in damage to the wing struts and linkages.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot. The examination focused on the flight parameters during the approach and the mechanical state of the aircraft upon impact. The pilot, who held a Private Pilot’s Licence and had significant flying experience, noted that the loss of control was primarily due to the management of airspeed and power during the landing flare.
