What happened
On March 3, 2014, a Robinson R44 II helicopter, registration TG-AAA, was involved in an accident in the municipality of Fraijanes, within the Department of Guatemala. The aircraft was operating in the area of Finca El Pajal at the time of the occurrence.
The investigation
The investigation was conducted by the Department of Flight Safety and Accident Investigation of the DGAC Guatemala. The technical examination focused on the aircraft's maintenance history, the environmental conditions at the time of the flight, and the operational parameters of the Robinson R44 II model. The investigation reviewed the aircraft's weight and balance, engine and propeller status, and the pilot's flight profile.
Findings
- The aircraft sustained significant damage during the impact.
- The investigation evaluated the operational limits of the Robinson R44 II, including its maximum takeoff weight of 2,500 lbs and its density altitude limitations.
- The investigation considered the impact of environmental factors, noting that the aircraft's performance is sensitive to temperature and humidity, particularly regarding carburetor ice risks in Robinson models.
- The investigation also reviewed the risks associated with night operations and marginal weather, which can lead to a loss of visual references and subsequent loss of control.
