What happened
On September 13, 2013, a Trush S2R, registration TG-FYS, was performing landing operations at a private grass airstrip located at Finca Caoba, in the municipality of Tiquisate, Escuintla, Guatemala. During the landing roll and deceleration phase, a motorcyclist entered the 30-meter wide runway. To avoid a collision with the vehicle, the pilot executed an abrupt turn, causing the aircraft to veer off the runway and strike a palm tree.
The impact resulted in structural damage to the aircraft, including impacts to the left wing, the leading edge of the left wing, the right side of the engine area, and the trim tab. There were no injuries reported in the incident.
The investigation
The DGAC/UIA investigation examined the aircraft's maintenance records, which showed that the last 100-hour inspection had been completed on May 27, 2013, and the aircraft was in compliance with all airworthiness requirements. The investigation also reviewed the meteorological conditions, which were found to be favorable for flight, and the runway characteristics, noting the narrow 30-meter width of the grass strip.
Findings
- The aircraft was airworthy, with all required documentation, including the Certificate of Airworthiness and registration, being valid.
- The fuel used was the manufacturer-recommended type and showed no signs of contamination.
- The primary cause of the accident was a runway incursion caused by the imprudent actions of a motorcyclist who crossed the active runway without ensuring it was clear of aircraft operations.
