What happened
On April 26, 2013, a Robinson R44 helicopter, registered as TG-LAG, was involved in an accident in the San José Calderas area, within the municipality of San Andrés Itzapa, Chimaltenango, Guatemala. The aircraft was operating in the region during a period of favorable meteorological conditions, with visibility exceeding 10 kilometers and winds from the north at approximately 14 to 18 knots.
Following the impact, the pilot sustained no injuries, as confirmed by a medical examination conducted on the day of the occurrence. However, the helicopter suffered substantial damage during the event.
The investigation
The investigation conducted by the DGAC/UIA examined the aircraft's maintenance history, meteorological reports from La Aurora International Airport, and the pilot's medical fitness. Records indicated that the aircraft's engine had undergone a 50-hour inspection in February 2013, and the maintenance logs showed that the aircraft was compliant with applicable Airworthiness Directives and Service Bulletins at the time of the accident. The investigation also reviewed the flight conditions, noting that while there were scattered clouds at low altitudes (between 1,800 and 2,000 feet), the overall visibility was good.
