Thruster T600N crashes into hedge near Isle of Wight

Casualties unknown • 2 nm south of Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, GB

A private flight involving a Thruster T600N ended in an accident near Yarmouth after the pilot experienced engine power loss during a go-around attempt.

What happened

On 1 September 2012, a Thruster T600N aircraft, registration G-CDSO, was conducting a private flight from a farm airstrip. The weather conditions were noted as fine and calm. Following a standard pre-flight inspection and a successful engine power check, the aircraft departed with 30 litres of fuel on board.

After approximately 45 minutes of flight, the pilot returned to the departure airstrip. During the final approach, the aircraft was traveling at a speed slightly higher than desired. In an attempt to manage the approach, the pilot initiated a go-around procedure. However, as the aircraft transitioned into a climb under full power, the engine began producing unusual noises, and the pilot experienced a significant loss of engine power.

To avoid obstacles and livestock, the pilot attempted a left-hand turn to reach a different landing area. Due to the rising terrain beyond the chosen path, the pilot was unable to land in the narrow strip of ground and instead impacted a substantial hedge running alongside the area. The aircraft sustained damage to the propeller, rudder pedal sub-assembly, right wing front spar, and the windscreen and front pod.

The investigation

The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report form provided by the pilot. The crew consisted of one pilot and one passenger, both of whom were wearing full harnesses. Following the impact, both occupants were able to exit the aircraft without assistance. The pilot sustained a minor injury to his foot, while the passenger remained uninjured.

Findings

  • The aircraft was flying in calm, clear conditions.
  • The pilot attempted a go-around due to an excessive approach speed.
  • The engine experienced a sudden and significant reduction in power accompanied by abnormal noises during the climb phase.
  • The pilot's attempt to maneuver into a secondary landing area was constrained by rising ground and the need to avoid obstacles.
  • At the time of the investigation, no specific cause for the engine power loss had been identified.

Probable cause

The engine experienced a significant loss of power and unusual noises during a go-around maneuver, leading to an inability to clear rising terrain and resulting in a collision with a hedge.
