What happened
On 21 October 2007, a Thruster TST Mk 1, registration G-MVDF, was conducting a private flight near Braintree, Essex. During the approach to Rayne Hall Farm, the pilot attempted a 'wheeler' type landing. However, the aircraft ballooned off the initial contact with the runway.
In an attempt to manage the situation, the pilot continued the landing attempt rather than initiating a go-around. Upon the second touchdown, the aircraft experienced a violent bounce. As the pilot applied power to attempt a go-around, the aircraft landed heavily and began to pitch forward while slewing to the right. This motion caused the propeller to strike the ground, resulting in broken propeller tips and a cracked pod. The impact also caused the right landing gear spring to break.
There were no injuries to the pilot or the single passenger on board, and both occupants were able to exit the aircraft without assistance.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report form provided by the pilot. The AAIB examined the damage to the airframe, which included the broken landing gear component and the damage to the propeller and pod. The investigation also reviewed the pilot's flight experience and the sequence of events leading to the heavy touchdown.
