What happened
On 4 July 2008, a Tri-R Kis Cruiser, registration G-BYZD, was conducting a private flight from an airstrip near Whitson, Gwent, toward Filton airfield. Prior to departure, the pilot performed a thorough inspection of the aircraft, confirming fuel levels in both tanks. Following a standard takeoff on Runway 23, the pilot performed a precautionary touchdown on the airstrip due to concerns regarding engine performance. After verifying that engine temperatures, pressures, and propeller operations were within normal limits, the pilot opted for a rolling takeoff with one stage of flap.
During the initial climbout, the pilot noticed the aircraft was not climbing at its usual rate. To avoid crossing the Bristol Channel with an uncertain engine, the pilot decided to return to the airfield. During this phase, the engine experienced a significant loss of power, causing the aircraft to descend. While maneuvering to avoid hangars and nearby structures, the left wing struck a tree, which caused the aircraft to spin 180 degrees before impacting the ground tail-first. Although the aircraft was destroyed by fire, the pilot and the single passenger escaped the wreckage without any injuries.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot. Investigators examined the engine parameters and the sequence of events leading to the loss of power. While the aircraft was consumed by flames, the intensity of the fire prevented any post-accident diagnostic attempts to determine the specific mechanical cause of the engine failure.
