Towing Aircraft Fails to Climb and Strikes Crop Field at Příbram

Casualties unknown • LKPM, CZ

A Moravan Z 226 MS failed to reach a safe climbing speed during a glider tow, resulting in the aircraft striking a field of tall crops and sustaining significant damage.

What happened

On June 7, 2014, a Moravan Z 226 MS, registration OK-LMB, was performing a glider tow operation at Příbram Airport (LKPM). The aircraft was attempting to tow an L 23 glider from the grass runway 24R.

During the takeoff roll, the aircraft experienced a slower-than-normal acceleration. Although the aircraft successfully released the glider after takeoff, it failed to achieve the necessary airspeed to initiate a safe climb. As the aircraft continued along the runway, the landing gear made contact with tall crops at the edge of a field located just beyond the runway boundary. The resistance from the crops caused a rapid loss of airspeed, leading the aircraft to settle into the field. The pilot attempted to use aileron inputs to counteract the impact, but the aircraft eventually lost directional stability and impacted the ground on its left side.

The glider pilot managed to disconnect the tow cable in time and landed safely in the field without injury or damage to the glider. The pilot of the Z 226 MS was uninjured, though the aircraft sustained significant damage, including a broken left landing gear, damage to the left wing, a destroyed wooden propeller, and damage to the engine cowling.

Probable cause

The primary cause of the accident was the pilot's decision to continue the takeoff attempt despite the aircraft failing to reach a safe climbing speed. This was likely exacerbated by a combination of high ambient temperatures and unfavorable wind conditions.
