What happened
On March 7, 2005, at approximately 07:50 UTC, an L-20 and Morava, registration OK-PLG, was being moved out of a hangar at Prague/Kbely Airport (LKKB) for a scheduled work flight. During the process of pushing the aircraft from the hangar, the landing gear slipped on a layer of ice and frost covering the ground in front of the hangar doors. This loss of traction caused the aircraft to shift unexpectedly, resulting in the right wing striking the hangar door tracks.
There were no injuries to the pilot or any other personnel involved in the movement. The aircraft sustained minor damage, specifically a dent to the right fuel tank.
The investigation
The ÚZPLN investigation focused on the procedures used during the aircraft's movement. The investigation established that the hangar floor itself was dry, but the external apron area was covered in ice and a light dusting of snow. The pilot, who was performing the pushing operation, was found to be properly licensed and medically fit, with no evidence of alcohol or toxic substance impairment.
Findings
- The operator's personnel was authorized to manipulate the aircraft.
- The primary cause of the incident was that the operator failed to account for the difference in traction between the dry hangar floor and the icy surface outside the hangar.
Safety action
- It is recommended that the ground movement of aircraft in this category be performed by at least two authorized personnel.
