Vans RV-4 excursion from runway at Swansea Airport

Casualties unknown • Swansea Airport, Wales, GB

A private Vans RV-4 aircraft veered off the runway surface at Swansea Airport during landing, resulting in minor damage to the propeller and engine.

What happened

On 16 October 2008, a Vans RV-4, registration G-BXPI, was conducting a private flight at Swansea Airport, Wales. The pilot had successfully completed six circuits using Runway 28 without any issues. However, during the seventh circuit, the approach was performed slightly high. As the pilot reduced power during the flare, the aircraft experienced a bounce. Following this bounce, the aircraft veered toward the left, leaving the asphalt runway surface and traveling onto the grass area.

The aircraft's wheels dug into the soft earth multiple times before the plane came to a stop on the disused Runway 33. There were no injuries to the pilot or the passenger. Following the event, the pilot taxied the aircraft back to the apron.

The investigation

An inspection of the aircraft following the incident revealed that the engine had been shock loaded and the propeller sustained slight damage. The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report form submitted by the pilot.

Probable cause

The aircraft departed the runway surface after a bounce occurred during a high approach, causing the wheels to dig into soft ground.
