What happened
On January 11, 2009, at approximately 06:13 local time, flight 6K865 departed from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (RPLL) bound for Caticlan Airport (RPVE). The aircraft, an ATR 72 registered as RP-C8893, was carrying 22 passengers and 5 crew members.
During the initial approach to Caticlan, the flight crew executed a go-around. While attempting a second approach, the aircraft failed to reach the runway surface properly, resulting in an undershoot. Following an initial contact with the ground, the aircraft bounced before making contact with the runway. During the landing roll, the aircraft veered toward the left side of the runway. This maneuver caused the left landing gear to fail after striking an embankment located before the road at the runway's end.
The aircraft eventually came to a stop against a concrete wall at the ramp area, specifically facing the Zest Air passenger lounge. The impact caused the aircraft to be damaged beyond economical repair.
Findings
- The accident involved 22 injuries in total, including 3 passengers who sustained serious injuries and 19 passengers with minor injuries.
- The crew members escaped without significant injury, though the captain sustained slight injuries.
- The primary factor in the loss of directional control was the failure of the left landing gear following contact with an embankment.
