What happened
During a flight originating from Manila, the crew began their descent toward Caticlan Airport. Upon receiving information that runway 06 was the active runway due to prevailing wind conditions, the captain elected to attempt a landing on runway 24 instead.
The approach to runway 24 was characterized by an excessive distance from the threshold. The aircraft touched down approximately 950 metres beyond the start of the runway, leaving insufficient pavement to decelerate safely. Consequently, the aircraft overran the runway surface and came to a stop in a grassy area, where it struck the perimeter fence.
Despite the impact with the fence, all 59 occupants on board managed to evacuate the aircraft without injury. However, the structural damage sustained during the excursion was so severe that the aircraft was declared a total loss.
Findings
- The primary factor in the excursion was an extended landing distance resulting from a touchdown too far down the runway.
