What happened
Following takeoff, the pilot of a glider operated under conditions involving strong winds and scattered to broken cumulus clouds, based on information received via local weather radio. Approximately fifteen minutes after being released from the tow airplane, the pilot observed a cold front approaching rapidly from the west.
In response to the approaching weather, the pilot initiated an immediate descent toward the airfield. During the approach, the aircraft encountered severe turbulence. To avoid performing a landing in extreme crosswinds, the pilot attempted to land diagonally across the runway, positioned into the wind.
Shortly before touchdown, the aircraft was struck by a sudden and severe downdraft. This maneuver caused the pilot's head to strike and break the plexiglass canopy. Following the impact, the right wing tip of the glider contacted the ground, resulting in a 360-degree ground loop. The pilot was not injured.
