What happened

On July 2, 2018, Far Eastern Air Transport flight FE8026, a McDonnell Douglas MD82, departed from Penghu Airport bound for Songshan Airport. While flying at 2,800 feet and approximately 7 miles from the Songshan Airport runway, the crew issued a PAN PAN urgency signal following the failure of the No. 1 engine.

The aircraft subsequently completed a safe landing at Songshan Airport. There were no injuries to the personnel on board.

The investigation

An investigation into the engine failure was conducted by the Aviation Safety Council of Taiwan, with the NTSB participating as the State of Manufacturer for both the aircraft and the engine. The investigation determined that the failure was caused by damage to the internal components of the No. 1 engine, which resulted in the engine cowling being pierced. The aircraft, registration B28035, was involved in the incident.
