What happened
On September 2, 2018, a skydiver was performing a specialized "camera-tandem" jump near the Chrcynno aerodrome (EPNC). Upon reaching an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters, the participant deployed the main parachute, a Crossfire2 99. Immediately following deployment, the canopy experienced a "twist" phenomenon, which caused the parachute to enter a deep rotation.
In response to the uncontrolled rotation, the skydiver initiated emergency procedures by cutting away the main canopy and deploying the reserve parachute. The descent concluded with a landing outside the active airfield area. The individual sustained no injuries during the incident.
The investigation
The investigation, conducted by the operator, examined the deployment sequence and the physical state of the equipment. The inquiry focused on the mechanics of the canopy inflation and the structural integrity of the parachute lines and attachment points to determine why the rotation occurred.
Findings
- The investigation identified several potential contributing factors to the malfunction, including an asymmetric body position during the canopy inflation process.
- Other possible causes included uneven distribution of the suspension lines within the rubber grommets or uneven wear of the rubber grommets themselves.
