Parachutist sustains injuries during landing at Kazimierz Biskupi

Casualties unknown • Kazimierz Biskupi(EPKB), PL

A student parachutist suffered a broken leg and ankle dislocation after landing with excessive vertical speed during a training jump.

What happened

On October 13, 2018, a student parachutist was performing their first jump as part of an Accelerated Freefall (AFF) training course. The jump originated from an altitude of 4,000 meters using a Navigator 260 parachute.

Following the deployment of the main parachute, the student was being guided via radio by an instructor on the ground. The student successfully managed the parachute and completed a proper landing pattern toward the airfield at Kazimierz Biskupi (EPKB). However, as the student reached an altitude of approximately 5 meters above the ground, the instructor issued a command to pull the steering toggles. The student maintained the toggles in the pulled position until touchdown, which resulted in an increased vertical descent rate upon impact with their legs.

Probable cause

The injury was caused by landing with increased vertical descent speed due to maintaining control toggles in the pulled position during the final moments of the descent.
