What happened
On May 1, 2019, a student skydiver performed their first parachute jump at the Gliwice (EPGL) aerodrome. The descent from the aircraft proceeded without incident, and the student successfully deployed the Commodore 230 parachute. Following the flight profile, the student positioned the parachute to land into the wind near the center of the landing area.
Upon landing, the student experienced significant pain in the left ankle area. Subsequent medical examination revealed a fracture of the lateral malleolus of the left lower leg.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the mechanics of the landing. It was established that the student's landing technique was the primary factor in the injury. The investigation concluded that the injury was likely caused by landing with the feet spread apart and only one leg making contact with the ground.
Safety action
Following the incident, the operator reviewed the event with other skydivers. The discussion specifically emphasized the importance of landing techniques, with particular focus on ensuring both feet make contact with the ground simultaneously.
