What happened
On January 17, 2015, during a visit to the Leyte province, a Bombardier Global 5000, registration RP-C9363, was involved in a runway excursion at Tacloban Airport. The aircraft was part of a flight group following an Airbus 320. Prior to the incident, weather conditions were deteriorating due to the approaching tropical storm Amang, which brought heavy rain and high winds to the region.
Following the departure of two preceding Airbus 320 aircraft, the RP-C9363 received takeoff clearance for runway 36 at 1335H, destined for Ninoy Aquino International Airport. The aircraft was carrying 16 people in total, including two pilots and 14 passengers. During the takeoff roll, the aircraft began to deviate toward the left side of the runway centerline. As the aircraft continued to veer, the left main landing gear left the runway surface near the north taxiway.
The excursion continued until the aircraft struck the concrete bases of runway edge lights and a concrete culvert. The aircraft came to a halt approximately 1,500 meters from the start of the takeoff roll. The impact resulted in substantial damage to the airframe. All passengers and crew were evacuated, and emergency responders arrived to assist with the evacuation and manage the scene.
Findings
- The aircraft experienced a significant deviation from the runway centerline during the takeoff roll.
- The excursion was characterized by a collision with runway infrastructure, specifically concrete light bases and a culvert.
