What happened
On July 25, 2008, at 15:25 UTC, an Airbus 319, registration OO-SSP, operated by Brussels Airlines, was taxiing at Faro Airport (LPFR) when a cockpit warning light illuminated, indicating a "Hydraulic Y Reservoir Overheat." Following the alert, the crew returned the aircraft to the stand to investigate the technical anomaly.
The investigation
During the technical inspection on the ground, investigators identified a malfunction involving the mechanical pump. It was determined that the pump triggered the overheat warning after approximately eight minutes of operation. Due to the need for replacement parts, the scheduled flight was cancelled. The Belgian Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis (BEA) was notified of the incident. As the occurrence did not meet the criteria for a full GPIAAF investigation, the Belgian authorities were informed that the Portuguese agency would not lead the investigation but remained available for technical collaboration.
Findings
- The primary cause of the warning was a malfunctioning mechanical pump that caused the hydraulic Y reservoir to overheat after a short period of operation.
- The flight was cancelled pending the arrival of necessary maintenance components.
