The Flight

Aero Flight 217 was a scheduled domestic passenger service operated by Aero O/Y (Finnair), the Finnish flag carrier. The flight connected Helsinki, Finland, with Mariehamn in the autonomous territory of Åland. On 8 November 1963, the aircraft departed from Helsinki en route to Mariehamn.

The Accident

While attempting to land at Mariehamn Airport in the municipality of Jomala, the aircraft crashed. The approach was a non-precision procedure, and visibility was poor at the time. The crash resulted in the deaths of 22 of the 25 people on board.

Significance

The accident is the second deadliest in Finnish aviation history. The deadliest, Aero Flight 311, occurred nearly two years earlier.
