Accident
On 5 May 1972, Alitalia Flight 112, a scheduled passenger flight from Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Rome to Palermo International Airport, crashed into Mount Longa approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) southwest of Palermo. The aircraft, a Douglas DC-8-43, was carrying 115 passengers and crew, none of whom survived.
Investigation
Official investigators determined that the crew had three miles of visibility during the approach and did not adhere to the established vectors issued by air traffic control. In contrast, an independent investigation concluded that the accident was caused by an explosion on board the aircraft.
