Accident Overview
Japan Air Lines Cargo Flight 1045, a charter flight, crashed on January 13, 1977, during its initial climb after departing from Anchorage, Alaska. The aircraft, a McDonnell Douglas DC-8-62AF, was en route from Grant County, Washington, to Tokyo, Japan, with a planned stopover in Anchorage.
Fatalities
All three flight crew members on board were killed in the crash.
Investigation Findings
The investigation determined that the captain, Hugh L. Marsh, was intoxicated at the time of the accident. Toxicology tests showed his blood alcohol level was 0.29. The co-pilot and other crew members were not impaired.
Cause
The crash occurred in part because the captain was intoxicated.
