What happened
The aircraft executed an emergency landing after the aileron control system became jammed. According to statements from the pilot occupying the rear seat and the owner in the front seat, the issue manifested following a series of steep turns. At that point, the aileron controls could no longer be moved.
With the aircraft locked in a left wing-down attitude, the crew maintained control using only the throttle, rudder, and elevator inputs. The aircraft skidded to the left until it impacted marshy terrain. Subsequently, the wreckage was moved from tidal water to facilitate recovery.
The investigation
A mechanic later inspected the aircraft and discovered a wrench located within the fuselage. This object was considered suspicious and potentially linked to the control failure. However, because the aircraft had been moved from its initial impact site, investigators could not positively identify the wrench as the specific device that caused the jamming.
Findings
The primary factor in this event was the mechanical obstruction of the aileron controls. The crew's ability to utilize alternative control surfaces allowed for a controlled skid rather than an uncontrolled crash, though the terrain impact resulted in damage. The inability to confirm the source of the jam due to the relocation of the wreckage remains a limitation in the final determination of the specific foreign object involved.
