Go-around failure leads to fatal crash into trees

Casualties unknown • Stehekin, WA, US

A pilot's attempt to go around after a balked landing resulted in the aircraft striking trees, killing rear passengers and injuring front occupants due to seat belt usage.

What happened

The aircraft crashed into trees located at the departure end of Runway D during a go-around maneuver. The pilot had initially attempted a landing on Runway 34 with full flaps extended. Power was reduced on final approach while the aircraft was over the trees, traveling at approximately 75 mph. When touchdown did not occur about halfway down the runway, the pilot decided to execute a go-around.

Winds were reported as light and variable. The pilot applied full throttle; however, the aircraft failed to clear the tree line and impacted the obstacles. All occupants were ejected from the aircraft during the crash sequence. The fuselage split and separated into two parts, which facilitated occupant ejection.

Findings

The pilot stated in a telephone interview that he experienced no powerplant or control malfunctions but noted the aircraft seemed to 'mush' after initial acceleration and climb. The front seat occupants were seriously injured, with their survival enhanced by the use of seat belts. The rear seat passengers sustained fatal injuries because their seat belts were not fastened.

The aircraft was destroyed. The crash occurred during the go-around phase of flight.

Probable cause

The pilot's failure to maintain adequate airspeed and altitude during a go-around, resulting in an inability to clear trees. Contributing factors included the pilot's report of the aircraft 'mushing' after initial acceleration and the rear passengers not wearing seat belts.
