What happened
The aircraft was engaged in a crop dusting operation when the pilot experienced significant buffeting while maneuvering through a turn. The pilot believed the aircraft was approaching a stall condition caused by vortex turbulence generated by another aircraft flying ahead. During this phase of flight, the pilot observed that although some engine power was initially available, increasing the throttle did not result in any corresponding increase in power output.
Concerned about the situation, the pilot decided to execute a precautionary landing. Before touching down, the pilot dumped a toxic load of supercide from the aircraft's spray system to mitigate potential environmental hazards or fire risks associated with the chemical payload. The aircraft subsequently made a hard landing in a level cotton field.
The investigation
Following the incident, investigators examined the engine to determine if mechanical failure contributed to the power loss. The inspection revealed that the valve train was intact and functioning correctly. Additionally, the magnetos were found to be sparking properly, indicating that the ignition system was operational. Differential compression tests yielded good results, suggesting that the internal sealing of the cylinders was within acceptable limits.
Furthermore, no fuel contamination was detected in the system. The investigation concluded that there were no apparent mechanical conditions or defects that would have prevented the normal operation of the engine during the flight.
