Accident Sequence
After the aircraft was topped off with fuel, the pilot departed from a 4,200 ft high runway toward mountainous terrain. The density altitude at the time of departure was approximately 6,700 ft. During the takeoff roll, the pilot rotated the aircraft at 50 mph and then accelerated in ground effect to 70 mph. The pilot initiated a climb, but the airspeed rapidly decreased as the aircraft exited ground effect.
Maneuvering and Stall
The pilot attempted to re-enter ground effect but was required to maneuver to avoid a power line and a house. While turning to avoid these obstructions, the aircraft stalled at about 20 ft above ground level and impacted terrain left wing first.
Post-Accident Examination
The pilot believed there was a partial loss of engine power, but a post-accident examination found no pre-impact or mechanical malfunction or failure.
