After a cold-weather jumpstart and preheat, both engines started normally. During initial climb, black smoke trailed from the left engine, then ceased. Accident Summary

An FBO mechanic reported that the pilot had requested a jumpstart. The weather was cold, with a temperature of 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The initial attempt to start the engine was unsuccessful. After the aircraft was preheated, both engines were started. Nothing abnormal was noted during taxi, run-up, or the takeoff roll. However, during the initial climb, black smoke was observed trailing from the left engine. At approximately 600 feet above ground level, the smoke stopped, and the aircraft entered a shallow left turn and began to lose altitude. A test of the pilot's blood revealed the following substances: cocaine at 0.25 mg/L, benzoylecgonine (a cocaine metabolite) at 3.78 mg/L, morphine at 0.32 mg/L, codeine at 0.07 mg/L, and carbon monoxide (CO2) levels ranging from 9.2 to 18 percent. The pilot was a heavy smoker.
