Accident Details
The accident occurred while the pilot was attempting to take off from Runway 10, which was not lighted. Evidence from tire marks showed that the aircraft ran off the runway about 1,200 feet from the threshold. After leaving the runway, the aircraft collided with trees before coming to rest.
Wingtip Tank Damage
Both main wingtip tanks were ruptured and had separated from the aircraft. No evidence of fuel spillage was found where the wingtip tanks came to rest in the grass. Additionally, no fuel was found in the auxiliary tanks.
Propeller and Engine Findings
The right propeller blades were curled aft during the crash sequence. The left propeller blades were relatively undamaged. No preimpact or mechanical problems were found with the left engine.
Post-Crash Discovery
A quantity of marijuana was found near the aircraft, and evidence of marijuana residue was found in the cabin. The aircrew had abandoned the aircraft, and the true owner was not verified.
