What happened
The incident involved a student pilot who had received explicit permission from the aircraft owner, who also served as his employer, to utilize the aircraft for solo practice sessions aimed at obtaining his private pilot certificate. The pilot was employed by a ranch and was aware that one of the ranch managers would be in the field searching for sheep. Instead of following the instructor's recommendation to remain in the designated area to practice take-offs and landings, the pilot diverted from the planned training route and flew toward the area where the manager was conducting the search.
During this unauthorized flight, the pilot utilized the aircraft's on-board loudspeaker system to broadcast announcements. At one point, the aircraft flew over the manager's vehicle while making a transmission. Approximately thirty minutes later, the aircraft returned to the same location, flying over the vehicle again. On this second pass, the pilot made an unintelligible broadcast before disappearing from view. The ranch manager subsequently heard impact sounds in the vicinity.
The aircraft had collided with a ridge in the area. In the aftermath, the pilot recalled being in a turn at the moment of impact. The flight was conducted under visual flight rules, and the pilot's decision to deviate from the training plan directly led to the accident site selection.
