Incident Overview
The aircraft, carrying an owner-private pilot and a student pilot, was on a local flight. While performing aerobatic maneuvers over a narrow canyon or gully, the aircraft collided with three power lines and a static line located approximately 100 feet above the ground. The impact severed the lines, and the aircraft subsequently crashed and came to rest within the canyon.
Weather Conditions
A sheriff's report stated that there was a low ceiling and poor visibility at the time. However, a witness estimated the sky condition as a 5,000-foot overcast and reported good visibility.
Wreckage Examination
An examination of the wreckage revealed no preimpact part failure or malfunction that would have contributed to the accident.
Toxicology Results
Toxicology analysis of vitreous fluids showed that the pilot-owner had an alcohol level of 0.097%, and the student pilot had an alcohol level of 0.05%.
