Aircraft Collides With Power Lines Near Open Field

Casualties unknown • Sunnyside, WA, US

An aircraft collided with electrical power lines routed over a draw between two ridges, coming to rest inverted near an open field with extensive damage to the left wing and rear fuselage.

What happened

The aircraft crashed after striking electrical power lines situated near an open field. The initial contact with the wires occurred at a point where the cables were routed over a draw located between two ridges. Following the collision, the aircraft came to rest in an inverted position, positioned between the power lines and the adjacent open field.

The investigation

A physical examination of the wreckage revealed that the aircraft remained relatively intact despite the severity of the impact. There was extensive ground impact damage concentrated on the left wing, along with significant compression and twisting observed on the rear fuselage. Heavy scrape marks were present on the left main landing gear, indicating contact with the ground.

The propeller showed no rotational marks or damage, suggesting it was not rotating at the time of impact. Inspection of the fuel system indicated that the left fuel cap was removed, while some fuel remained in the rear corner of the tank; the right fuel cap was found securely in place. The carburetor heat control was wedged in the on/hot position.

Mechanical issues were identified with the electrical system. The connecting wires to the starter switch were found corroded at the attachment screws, partly separated, and the switch case was broken. Despite these findings, no preimpact part failure or malfunction was verified as a contributing factor to the accident.
