Takeoff and Initial Climb
The student pilot began a takeoff from runway 20. An estimated 10-knot right crosswind was present. After approximately 800 feet of ground roll, the aircraft lifted off at about 65 miles per hour.
Loss of Control
At an altitude of about 30 feet, the aircraft started to settle with a left drift as it flew abeam trees on the right side of the runway. The instructor then took control of the aircraft but could not arrest the drift or the sink rate.
Forced Landing
To avoid trees and a ditch, the instructor elected to turn left into a field on the left side of the runway. The aircraft touched down in that field, and during the landing, the right main landing gear separated from the fuselage.
Post-Impact
After the gear separation, the aircraft ground-looped to the right and came to rest inverted after skidding about 50 feet.
