Approach
A flight was cleared for an ILS localizer approach to Runway 36 at Harrison/Boone County Airport at 2003 CDT. Approximately seven minutes later, the aircrew reported executing a missed approach and was subsequently cleared to the outer compass locator for another approach attempt. The crew requested that the Harrison Flight Service Station specialist increase the intensity of the approach lights, stating they did not see the airport until midfield. The specialist complied.
At about 2015 CST, the aircrew reported inbound at the BAKKY intersection, which served as the outer marker. The outer marker was located 4.7 miles south of the I-HRO localizer distance measuring equipment (DME) on an outbound heading of 179 degrees.
Accident
The flight did not arrive at the airport, and a search was initiated. The wreckage was found at the site where the aircraft collided with a mountain at an elevation of 1,840 feet. The impact heading was 335 degrees. The crash site was located 3.5 miles west-southwest of the airport. Additionally, the site was situated along the 179-degree radial of the Harrison VOR, approximately the same distance and direction from the VOR as the outer marker was from the localizer DME.
Weather at the airport was reported as 500 feet overcast, 2 miles visibility with fog. Airport elevation is 1,364 feet above mean sea level.
