Incident Overview
An aircraft on a flight from Wilson Municipal Airport experienced a vibration upon reaching 3,700 feet. The pilot reported the vibration ceased after reducing power and requested a landing at Rocky Mountain-Wilson Airport, where a maintenance facility was available.
Approach and Landing
Upon visual contact with the airport, the pilot requested and was granted a visual approach to Runway 04. The pilot stated that he had a view of the approach and runway lights inside the outer marker. However, once inside the middle marker, the runway disappeared in fog. The pilot increased power from 15 to 18 inches of manifold pressure, but the aircraft contacted the ground short of the runway.
Impact and Damage
The aircraft touched down approximately 150 feet short of Runway 04. It contacted two rows of approach lights and a ground drop-off, which sheared all three landing gears.
Post-Accident Inspection
Post-accident inspection of the aircraft and engines failed to disclose any mechanical failure or malfunction.
