Witnesses reported the aircraft left a restricted landing area, executed a climb, then descended and impacted the ground, burning. No mechanical issues were found. The pilot's blood alcohol was 0.135%, and two rear-seat passengers were not belted.

Accident Sequence

Witnesses reported that the aircraft had just left the restricted landing area (RLA) when it entered a climbing maneuver, then descended and impacted the ground, where it burned. Two witnesses stated that the aircraft went straight up, then straight down before crashing. After impact, there was little or no forward movement. The left wing was canted forward, and there was evidence that the aircraft had yawed left (tail to the right) after impact.

Witness Reports

Two additional witnesses noted a power interruption during the flight. However, a post-accident teardown of the engine revealed no preimpact mechanical problem that would have caused a loss of power.

Toxicological Findings

Five open beer cans were found in the wreckage. Blood and urine samples of the pilot tested positive for alcohol, with levels of 0.135% and 0.134%, respectively. Blood tests of the passengers showed alcohol levels of 0.074% and 0.085%.

Fuel and Equipment

Automotive fuel was found in the aircraft, although the plane had no Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for this type of fuel.

Passenger Restraints

Neither of the rear seat passengers were wearing seat belts.
