Incident Overview
A pilot reported that after leveling off at 9,000 feet mean sea level, a popping sound was heard followed by an explosion in the left engine. The explosion caused the entire left side of the upper cowling to protrude into the airstream, which resulted in the aircraft rolling to the right. The pilot had to apply full right rudder and half left aileron deflection to maintain control.
Emergency Procedures
Unable to maintain altitude at blue line, the pilot declared an emergency and requested radar vectors to the nearest airport. Upon crossing the airport perimeter, the aircraft was less than 10 feet above the ground. The pilot elected to land with the landing gear retracted on the grass area between the runway and taxiway.
