Background
Prior to the flight, the pilot received two weather briefings and was advised of low ceilings, restricted visibility, and mountain obscurement along the route. The briefings also indicated that visual flight rules (VFR) flight was not recommended.
Flight Events
The surviving passenger reported that after entering the mountain area, they continued 'in and out of clouds' and that the pilot 'had to climb straight up into the clouds... then it (the aircraft) struck something.' Three highway patrol officers observed the aircraft flying just beneath clouds, which they estimated were about 100 feet above ground level. The officers reported that the aircraft circled twice, then proceeded along the highway and disappeared into a cloud bank.
Crash and Survival
Shortly after disappearing into the clouds, the aircraft crashed on steeply rising, mountainous terrain. Initial impact was with a treetop located in a ravine. Both occupants were wearing heavy ski clothing. After some time, the rear seat occupant regained consciousness and retrieved a blanket from the baggage compartment. After spending the night on the mountainside, she made her way to the highway for help.
