Accident Summary
According to the pilot, wind conditions were light prior to the final approach. During the flare, a gust of wind lifted the right wing, causing the aircraft to balloon. The airspeed decreased, and the aircraft entered a full-stall, three-point attitude.
Sequence of Events
As the aircraft descended, it impacted the runway. Both main landing gears broke in rapid succession. The fractures occurred generally about the mid-strut step mount area of the leaf spring gear assembly. After the gear failure, the aircraft skidded to a stop, damaging the propeller and the right wing tip.
Damage Assessment
A detailed visual inspection of the landing gear revealed the damage to be a brittle fracture located just below the step mounts. No other structural issues were noted in the source.
