Accident Overview
N5527K crashed approximately 2 miles south of Orange County Airport shortly after a night takeoff from Runway 21. The flight was operating under instrument flight rules (IFR). Departure instructions included a right turn of 130 degrees to a heading of 340 degrees magnetic to intercept Victor airway V-58 and climb to 5,000 feet. The pilot contacted Boston Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC) after takeoff. When asked if airborne, the pilot's response was garbled. No further radio transmissions were received, and radar contact was not established.
Weather Conditions
Witnesses reported hearing a low flying aircraft but did not see it, noting misty and foggy weather conditions. A weather observation taken 7 miles east of the accident site reported a partial obscuration with a ceiling of 1,000 feet overcast, visibility of 4 miles, fog, and haze.
Wreckage and Examination
The aircraft impacted the ground in a steep descent. The destruction of the airplane precluded detailed systems documentation. Teardown inspections of the engines did not reveal evidence of mechanical malfunction or failure. Tree limbs over the crash site were observed to be stained brown, as if by fuel.
