What happened
During the course of an aerial application operation, the commercial pilot reported that the aircraft engine initially experienced a partial loss of power. This condition was followed shortly thereafter by a complete failure of engine power. In response to the emergency situation, the pilot attempted to execute a forced landing on a nearby county gravel road.
The investigation
A post-accident examination of the aircraft revealed that the engine failure was caused by a cracked cylinder number one. This mechanical defect led directly to the loss of propulsion during the critical phase of flight.
Findings
The pilot's attempt to land on the gravel road resulted in the aircraft stalling before reaching the main surface of the road. The aircraft subsequently struck the shoulder of the road, short of the paved or graded driving area. The mechanical failure was identified as a cracked cylinder, which contributed significantly to the inability to maintain controlled flight and complete a safe landing.
