Power line strike during emergency landing following engine power loss

Casualties unknown • Ridgely, MD, US

An aircraft experienced a significant loss of engine power during its first flight after two years of inactivity, resulting in the landing gear striking a power line during an emergency field landing.

What happened

The aircraft was operating under a ferry permit for its first flight following approximately two years of inactivity. Following a pre-takeoff engine runup, the takeoff proceeded normally until the aircraft reached an altitude of approximately 600 feet AGL. At that height, the pilot reported hearing a pop accompanied by mechanical noise.

Following this noise, the engine power decreased to roughly 50%. The pilot was able to maintain altitude and remained within the traffic pattern to attempt a return for landing. However, as the aircraft turned onto the base leg, the engine lost power completely. While attempting to land in an open field, the landing gear struck a power line. The pilot was not injured.

The investigation

An examination of the aircraft was conducted, but the inspection did not disclose evidence of mechanical malfunction.
