Aircraft Exits Runway Following Engine Power Loss

Casualties unknown • Van Nuys, CA, US

An aircraft experienced a total loss of engine power during the downwind leg of its approach, resulting in an emergency landing and runway excursion.

What happened

During the downwind leg of the flight, the aircraft suffered a total loss of power. The pilot attempted to restart the engine, but these efforts were unsuccessful. Consequently, the pilot executed an emergency landing on the runway.

In an effort to navigate the airport, the pilot angled the aircraft toward the runway. Upon touchdown, the pilot was unable to maintain alignment with the runway centerline. The aircraft exited the runway and collided with the Visual Approach Slope Indicator (VASI) lights before coming to a complete stop. There were no injuries reported.

The investigation

An examination of the engine was conducted following the incident. Investigators found no evidence of any pre-existing malfunctions or failures within the engine components. Additionally, while the operator restarted the engine shortly after the accident, they could not recall whether the fuel selector valve had been properly set to a fuel tank at the time of the power loss.

Probable cause

The cause of the loss of engine power could not be determined.
