Casualties unknown • Atlanta, GA, US

An aircraft collided with approach lighting systems and impacted the ground short of the runway during a landing attempt.

What happened

During the arrival phase at the airport, the pilot experienced confusion regarding the visual traffic clearance required for landing. Following a brief communication with the air traffic controller, the pilot established a left downwind pattern for Runway 08. During this process, the pilot inquired about the operational status of the runway lights and was informed that they were functional.

After completing necessary maneuvers, the pilot transitioned to a final approach for Runway 08. Approximately 800 feet before reaching the end of the runway, the aircraft collided with the approach lighting system. The impact subsequently caused the airplane to strike the ground approximately 375 feet short of the runway.

The investigation

A technical examination of the airframe and all onboard subsystems was conducted. The inspection failed to disclose any mechanical problem contributing to the accident.
