What happened
An instrument-rated commercial pilot was tasked with flying passengers to Atkinson, Nebraska, for a high school football game before continuing the flight to Lincoln, Nebraska. While weather conditions were initially clear with good visibility during the early evening, witnesses observed fog moving into the area around the time the football game concluded.
According to witness accounts, the aircraft departed without an IFR clearance and encountered dense fog immediately after liftoff. One witness reported that the airplane failed to climb following takeoff. The aircraft subsequently struck a truck, a stock trailer, and a hog confinement barn located approximately 3/8 mile west of the departure end of the runway.
The investigation
A post-accident examination of the aircraft was conducted, which revealed no evidence of any preimpact mechanical malfunction. Prior to the flight, the pilot had received three separate weather briefings and was specifically advised regarding necessary flight precautions for low ceilings and reduced visibility.
