What happened
The pilot performed two circling maneuvers over a beach area to evaluate wind conditions and determine if the location was suitable for landing. During the final stage of the landing flare, approximately two feet above the ground, the pilot heard a loud thump originating from the right side of the aircraft.
Following the impact, the pilot initiated a go-around. Upon inspection, a dent was observed on the outboard section of the right wing. The pilot then elected to divert and land at King Salmon.
After the aircraft was safely on the ground, an investigation revealed an eight inch circular gash in the leading edge of the right wing, specifically located in the area of the outboard spar.
The investigation
Company personnel conducted a subsequent inspection of the beach area to locate the source of the impact. However, they were unable to identify any object that the aircraft might have struck.
