Engine power loss leads to forced landing in grassy area

Casualties unknown • Kinston, NC, US

An engine failure during the initial climb resulted in a forced landing in a field after the pilot attempted to return to the airport.

What happened

During the initial climb at approximately 500 feet MSL, the aircraft experienced a loss of engine power. In response to the power loss, the pilot initiated a left turn to head back toward the airport. After successfully clearing several trees, the pilot performed a forced landing in a grassy area.

The investigation

An inspection of the aircraft identified a piece of silicon baffling material measuring 8 inches by one inch lodged within the carburetor airbox. Two inches of this material were found extending into the carburetor venturi. Following the removal of this foreign object, the engine operated normally during a subsequent test run. Investigators were unable to determine the origin of the silicon material, and a review of maintenance records showed no recent work that would have required the use of such material.

Probable cause

The engine lost power due to silicon baffling material obstructing the carburetor venturi.
