What happened

During a sales demonstration flight with a prospective buyer aboard, the pilot performed a low pass over the runway before entering a left downwind pattern. While turning downwind, the engine lost power. The pilot attempted a forced landing in a nearby field; however, the aircraft struck trees and cartwheeled across the ground.

The investigation

Mechanical examination of the aircraft revealed that the fuel strainer contained two ounces of fuel, while the carburetor fuel bowl contained one ounce. The left fuel tank held 8.5 gallons of fuel. Investigators also noted a placard located above the right fuel gauge which stated: "NO TAKE-OFF ON RIGHT TANK WITH LESS THAN 1/3 TANK".
