What happened
On August 21, 1994, a Royal Air Maroc ATR 42 aircraft, registered as CN-CGT, departed from Agadir–Al Massira Airport in Morocco. The flight carried 44 individuals, comprising both passengers and crew members. Approximately ten minutes after leaving the runway, the aircraft deviated from its intended flight path and crashed into the surrounding terrain. There were no survivors among those on board.
Investigation
Authorities conducted a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The investigation focused on flight data recordings, cockpit voice transcripts, and physical evidence recovered from the site. Analysis revealed that the aircraft's descent was not due to mechanical failure or environmental conditions. Instead, the data indicated deliberate control inputs by one of the pilots in the cockpit.
Findings
The inquiry concluded that the crash was the result of intentional actions by a crew member. This finding established that the pilot deliberately maneuvered the aircraft into the ground. The incident marked the deadliest accident involving an ATR 42 aircraft at that time, highlighting the severity of the loss of life and the unusual nature of the cause.
